If any filmmaker was going to do this idea justice, it would be Spielberg, as the modern heir of the kind of fantasy the original play symbolized in its time and later adaptations. (Via Walt Disney, thanks to his 1953 animated adaptation).

Thanks for this write-up. I'd been reading a lot of negative takes/revisits on this film recently, and it was baffling - I have no doubt it's not a masterpiece, and even Spielberg doesn't think highly of it, but it works so much better than any other "Peter Pan" live action movie has! The cast is perfection, as you said, the score is Williams at his peak, and the story does wrangle its themes in satisfying ways. Even if overlong, it's such a pleasant watch.
