I've never seen the movie, but it sounds weirdly divided from Superman... but yet not?

I guess this was made back in the days before a "Cinematic Universe" was ever thought possible, so I suppose one can't be too harsh about that! 😅

It achieves the super feat of being ahead of its time ... and also very much of its time.

This was my sister's favourite movie. She was a huge Supergirl fan so every year on her anniversary I watch it and I absolutely love it. I really enjoyed reading this piece ❤️

I really think Supergirl has kind of gotten disrespected in her various incarnations, for reasons out of her control, but still...

She comes into the comics in the '60s and is treated mostly like a second-tier figure. This movie bombs. She gets killed off in "Crisis Of Infinite Earths", dramatically, but still killed. She's reduced to a second-tier figure again in most animated depictions. Eventually, she does have some success staring on television, but that show eventually gets cancelled. Granted, she is getting a second shot at movie stardom, but how will that fare?

I entirely understand that, like all of the Earthly and Kryptonian figures in Superman's orbit, she was never meant to replace him, only to supplement him. But she has achieved quite a bit in her own name, and I don't know why that isn't celebrated more...

My fellow Canadian Tim Hanley has written whole books on other female figures in the comics, so I thought this might be up his alley. But that hasn't happened yet, and I may have to do it instead.

She has had some good comic book series. I especially enjoyed the series Peter David wrote in the 90s and early 2000s. I might have to revisit that one sometime.

A buddy and I saw this back when it was released, and I don’t think I’ve watched it since. But I definitely remember us agreeing that the movie wasted a lot of good potential. Had the same storytelling vision of the flight scene carried through the rest of the movie I think it could have been a lot better. One of the things Ms. Benoist did so well was give her Supergirl persona so much more strength and confidence than her “Kira” persona and differentiate between the two. Ms. Slater would have been well served if she could have done the same. Reading your suggestions, I can see a better movie taking shape indeed.

Reeves was supposed to have two scenes, at least from what I've read about it, but was shooting a different movie (I think Somewhere in Time but may be wrong about that) and the studio did not have the budget left to shuttle him back and forth so wrote him out

The biggest problem with the movie was due to uneven moments that felt like last minute edits throughout it. My only complaint about Slater was that I always thought she looked a LOT better in her "civilian ID" than as Supergirl. Otherwise thought she was great and loved seeing her as Melissa Benoit's version's adopted mother in the later TV series
