Well, marking that one off my list. I might go and watch the Joker movie now, actually; I'm intrigued, but this one like you say just seems pointless. "In the absence of Batman" really says it all, doesn't it.
Yeah, I had originally planned to skip the first Joker movie specifically due to its lack of Batman. A supervillain movie without the superhero had no appeal to me. But then so many people were proclaiming it to be either a masterpiece or a menace to society, so I got curious. It's neither of those things, but it's a compelling movie if you're in the right mood for it. But don't even try to reconcile it with anything else Batman-related.
The trailer fooled me. I won’t be wasting my time then. I was never a fan of Joker but was intrigued by the sequel. This looks like an awful idea and a waste of a great IP.
It is an unfortunate waste (which would be even more apparent if I had gotten into spoilers). If you didn't like the first movie, there's a strong chance you'd hate this one.

Your thesis is here is spot on — the first should have been it. Not everything needs a sequel.

I know about the plot and “twists” and couldn’t believe someone approved them. And yes. I would’ve hated it.
It sounds like, once again, the company couldn't decide on the narrative.
Talk about somebody- or some film studio- losing their way...
